As part of our efforts to create an inclusive space, one of our testing sites, Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services renovated their HIV prevention clinic room.
Prior to renovations, the space was a traditional clinical room, complete with an exam table and other medical supplies. While extremely functional, we found this space to be off-putting for some of our clients. The bright lighting and blank walls did not create a warm and inviting environment that we know is important, especially when discussing sexual health. We know our clients come from various backgrounds and we strive to meet them where they are. Providing services and resources in a welcoming environment for our clients to achieve sexual health is our priority. We wanted our HIV prevention clinic room to reflect this.
Renovations in the HIV clinic room include an art piece highlighting the history of the queer experience in America. The art installation was completed by two local artists, Ezra Komo (he/him) and Ashton Trimmer (they/them), in partnership with LIT Studios located in Columbia.
We replaced the exam table with a comfortable leather loveseat for our clients to relax in while waiting for test results or learning about the services we provide. There's also an armchair available as an alternative seating option.
Our team of health educators are BRITE trained through The Center Project. This means we are committed to creating respectful and affirming spaces where LGBTQIA+ people are supported and celebrated. We practice allyship by educating ourselves and others, challenging assumptions and stereotypes, and advocate for inclusive environments.
A floor lamp and table lamp are used to create soft lighting in the new clinic space. This creates a warm ambiance for better discussion between our clients and health educators.
While visiting our space clients will receive a variety of resources including educational materials, lube and condoms to help make safe sexual health easily accessible to them.
