TRICHOMONIASIS (TRICH)

What is Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis (or “trich”) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It can be spread during vaginal sex with someone who has the infection. Trichomoniasis can affect the vagina, urethra, or penis. It can be cured with prescription medication, usually a single dose of antibiotics.

Symptoms

Many people with trichomoniasis do not have any symptoms, so you may not realize you have it. Even without symptoms, you can still pass it to sexual partners. If symptoms do appear, they usually show up 5–28 days after exposure and may include:

  • Unusual vaginal discharge that may be frothy, yellow-green, or have a strong odor

  • Vaginal or penile itching or irritation

  • Discomfort or burning during urination

  • Pain during sex

  • Mild lower abdominal discomfort
